February News.

What can you do to prevent sagging of the skin:

In order to maintain your beautiful skin and slow the rate at which it ages, it is important to understand the skin's basic anatomy and composition and be aware of what you can to do to correct and prevent aging.

The abundant structural component within the dermis is the protein The dermis is comprised largely of collagen (75%). Its mesh-like framework gives the skin strength and flexibility. Another important protein found in the skin is elastin which gives the skin its ability to recoil after stretching. The last important skin component I will mention here is the moisture binding molecule, glycosaminoglycans (GAG’s) that enable collagen fibers to retain water and provide moisture to the epidermis.
As we age there are several factors that cause us to have a reduction in collagen, elastin and GAG’s and include:

  • UV radiation exposure
  • Genetics - Biologically programmed decrease in rate of skin cell renewal and production of elastin, collagen and GAG’s
  • Environmental assaults (pollution, heat, cold...)
  • improper skin care
  • hormonal changes

The great news is that there are things we can do to fight the reduction of collagen, elastin and GAG’s as we age!
  1. Minimize UV (Sun) exposure – The UV rays produces free radicals that injure the skin by damaging the actual collagen and elastin fibers and the cells (fibroblasts) that make these proteins. UV exposure accounts for roughly 90% of the signs associated with aging skin. So use a chemical free sunscreen daily and reapply every 2-3 hours.
  2. Skin antioxidants –These scavenge the free radicals missed by your sunscreen.  I suggest Phyto-C line with vitamins A, C, E and olive leaf extract, DNA SuperNatural Vitamin A, Metamorphosis MutiVitamin Night Cream.
  3. Skin exfoliation- use alpha hydroxy acids and retinols. These increase cellular turnover and production of collagen and elastin.  I suggest Rhonda Allison's Cleansing pads, Phyto-C's Active Serum.
  4. Stop smoke exposure – decreases skin oxygenation and produces free radicals.
  5. As always, remember to watch your weight, eat a healthy diet with minimal sugar, keep hydrated with water, exercise, minimize stress and get appropriate sleep.
